1. Status update caused by Pending Checkins.
The PCW is updated as long as the window is created, not only displayed.
The View/PendingCheckins Window menu command only shows/hides the window, and does not destroy it.
The window is created the first time the menu command is chosen, and is only destroyed when VS is closed!
When VS is closed the position of all visible toolwindows is persisted, and on VS startup all saved toolwindows are re-created.
Thus, you'd have to hide the window, close and reopen VS (and now PCW will not be created) therefore it won't get updated.
For a more permanent solution I'd just rename the following key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\8.0\ToolWindows\{53544C4D-5C18-11d3-AB71-0050040AE094} into say into "_{53544C4D-5C18-11d3-AB71-0050040AE094}", and VS won't know how to recreate automatically the window (using the menu will still create and make the window visible, and it will be updated until VS is closed).
