Why is it that Mr. Hastings, a typically articulate and intelligent man, is allowing himself to be used as a tool to shape Russia into a snarling bear ready to leap at western Europe? In the last century, Russia has lost 700,000 sq miles of sovereign territory which contained an estimated 180 million people. In the diplomatic consensus which formed following the Second World and Cold War, Russia retained the former Soviet Bloc (with particular emphasis on the Baltic states) in its sphere of political and economic influence. In the past two decades, the West (that is, the United States and Western Europe) have consistently violated this unspoken agreement and have tried everything in their power to marginalise Russia on the world stage, despite being an instrumental player on the continental and world stages since the 18th century. Mr. Hasting's beating of the war drum here is disappointing and dangerous, while the United Kingdom's absence at the VE Day parade is simply shameful.
